The battery is the backbone of any vehicle’s electrical system. It supplies power to the starter and ignition system. It also delivers the extra power needed when the electrical load exceeds the alternator’s supply.
The vehicle battery and its connections should be checked at every service. At Belrose Service Centre, this component is checked routinely at every service interval. However, there are instances where the battery may be under performing “sluggish” on occasion, do not hesitate to advise the team when dropping off the vehicle.
It is recommended to replace the battery after a few years to maintain the performance of the vehicle
The alternator is a vehicles electrical charger. It generates direct current for recharging the battery and also assists power the other electrical loads. Its various parts are contained in an aluminium housing.
The alternator’s drive belt is checked routinely every service. A loose belt can reduce alternator output and run down the battery.
It’s also important to have the vehicles entire charging system checked periodically. In the meantime, signs of a poor alternator are poor light operation, a dead battery, frequent bulb replacement and most common a battery light coming on and staying on.
The starter cranks the engine when the start button is pushed or the key is fully turned clockwise. It’s located on the back of the engine or the front of the transmission. If experiencing slow cranking or even abnormal noises on cranking it may relate to the starter motor.
